USAA SHOULD NOT PAY YOUR CAR LENDERS INSTEAD OF YOU

USAA sells Car Replacement Assistance Insurance as an additional feature on auto policies. The Car Replacement Assistance Insurance promises to pay 20% over the actual cash value of the vehicle if there is a total loss. The purpose is to give the insured money to put towards buying a new car. Many of the USAA insureds purchase this Car Replacement Assistance Insurance in addition to GAP insurance (GAP insurance covers the difference between what you owe on the vehicle and the vehicle value if there is a total loss).

The problem is that when a USAA insured has a total loss where the lienholder is owed more money than the value of the vehicle, USAA often pays the lienholder the Car Replacement Assistance Insurance instead of paying the insured. This especially hurts insureds who had purchased the GAP insurance to cover whatever is owed the lienholder. Those people expect to let GAP pay off the lender and USAA to pay them the 20% to help them pay for a new car.
